Wrightwood Timeline
Before 1771 & 1771 - 1850 .. 1851 - 1900 .. 1901 - 1930 .. 1931 - 1960 .. 1961 - 1980 .. 1981 - 2000

1931 - 1960

1932:
The Big Pines Ski Club was organized and ski runs were cleared in the following years with the help of the government's Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) at Blue Ridge (Mountain High) and at Table Mountain (Ski Sunrise)

1934:
Highway 138 through Cajon Pass to Palmdale was completed.

1937:
State Highway 2 from Highway 138 to Wrightwood was completed.

1937:
Goodspeed and Hildred Corpe became managers of the Wrightwood Lodge. Mr. Corpe owned a real estate business, acted as agent for the Edison Company, operated a volunteer telephone service and later contributed to the establishment of the first volunteer fire department.

1938:
Wrightwood Elementary School was constructed on Highway 2 with grades one through eight enrolled. The "bunkhouse" school became the Community Center.

1940:
Los Angeles County, due to financial hardship, turned Big Pines Recreation Park over to the United States Forest Service with the agreement that the park would continue to operate as a recreational center.

1942:
United States soldiers were trained at a mock-up German village at Big John's Flat located west of Wrightwood. Nothing remains of the village today.

1946:
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge, Lloyd Nix, purchased the rights to Wrightwood from a group of partners who had acquired the Village from the Security Pacific Bank after Sumner Wright's financial failures.

1946:
The Community Center, Wright's original bunkhouse, was purchased by the Catholic Diocease and was first occupied by the Sisters of Social Service. It then became Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church.

1946:
Judge Nix, with the help of the exisiting organizations in the village numbered the homes in Wrightwood giving each home an official address.

1947:
The "Wrightwood Pine Needle", a monthly newspaper, was published by Judge Nix. Early copies of the paper were destroyed in a warehouse fire.

1947:
Dr. Alexander Herzen (Von Herzen) was the first medical doctor in Wrightwood. He practiced in the Village on the weekends and spent four days a week in the Wilshire area of Los Angeles.

1949:
The fire station at the corner of Apple and Cedar Streets was built. It housed two fire engines. It is now the community's Old Firehouse Museum.

1950:
The Davidson Arch was removed at Big Pines Park so large trucks could be accommodated. All that remains is one stone tower. The highway was never widened.

1956:
The Angeles Crest Highway from La Canada to Wrightwood (Highway 2) was completed after nearly twenty-seven years of construction.
